The Santa Fe City Council passed the Resolution In Support of the Bill of Rights and Ci
vil Liberties for Santa Feans late Wednesday night in a 7-1 vote. Despite the late hour, fifteen or more people, including Executive Director of the New Mexico ACLU Peter Simonson, spoke in favor of the Resolution, while no one except City Councilor David Pfeffer spoke
against it. Pfeffer said that it was not the place of the council to address national issues.
Councilors Bushee, Coss, and Heldmeyer joined initial Resolution sponsors Matt Ortiz and Miguel Chavez in sponsoring the resolution, and Councilors Lopez and
Wurzburger helped to pass it.
Councilor Ortiz stressed the positive action the Resolution would engender, including
the opening of public dialog between citizens, elected officials, and law enforcement on issues of civil liberties and security.
